To love Him

To know Thee

In Mark Chapter 10 there is the story of the rich young man that comes to Jesus to find out what he needed to do to have eternal live. The Savior lovingly tells him that the only thing this young man is lacking is that he needs to sell all he has, give to the poor, and follow him.

This young man had been obedient to all of the other commandments, and  he wanted to follow the Savior…but the command to leave his riches behind was too much for him:

22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

I want to follow the Savior, and I’d like to think that if I had been that young man I would have hurried to do what he asked of me. But would I? What are the Lord’s commands that I grieve over letting go of?

There is another example, in the Book of Mormon–Alma 22, of a King that asked the same question-

15 And it came to pass that after Aaron had expounded these things unto him, the king said: What shall I do that I may have this eternal life of which thou hast spoken? Yea, what shall I do that I may be born of God, having this wicked spirit rooted out of my breast, and receive his Spirit, that I may be filled with joy, that I may not be cast off at the last day? Behold, said he, I will give up all that I possess, yea, I will forsake my kingdom, that I may receive this great joy.

18 O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God; and if there is a God, and if thou art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee,

There is my answer! All Jesus wants from me, in exchange for eternal life with him, is for me to give away all of my sins. Come to him with a broken heart and contrite spirit, repent and forsake.

Elder Robert C. Gay said-

“This is the exchange the Savior is asking of us: we are to give up all our sins, big or small, for the Father’s reward of eternal life. We are to forget self-justifying stories, excuses, rationalizations, defense mechanisms, procrastinations, appearances, personal pride, judgmental thoughts, and doing things our way. We are to separate ourselves from all worldliness and take upon us the image of God in our countenances.

I will start where I am. I will try harder. I will give away ALL of my sins so that I can know him!
